Group CM8 returns with another super low budget horror: Fear House is an obvious “B” movie starring bunch of unknown actors in what tries to be a scary story. The quality is really weird too, according to the NFO: dirty low bitrate of 579 kbps and 6 channel AC3 audio on 1 CD.
Relatives and colleagues of reclusive writer Samantha Ballard track her to an isolated house in the California desert where they discover a traumatized Samantha. She greets them with the grim announcement that they will die if they attempt to leave the house. After Samantha’s ex-husband and his girlfriend suffer horrible deaths while trying to escape, the others realize that she was serious.

Frank has a penchant for beating the tar out of Rod, who just keeps coming back for more in the hopes of earning Frank's respect by besting him in one of their regular knock-down brawls. When Frank gets sick and needs a $50,000 operation, Rod attempts to raise the money by undertaking his biggest stunt ever--jumping 15 buses, one more than Evel Knievel himself ever dared. After all, he's got to get Frank all better so he can kick his ass! |

I loved the book and have taught it every year to my AP students. We've been excited to see the film and have had big hopes for it. I find the 1949 film nearly impossible to watch, because they made so many changes to really critical parts of the book.
I think this movie will be a great addition to my DVD collection to help establish setting and so on for future AP English classes.
The script keeps lots of the dialogue, images, and the looping storytelling from the text I understand the compressions they needed to do--and they generally worked.
The acting was powerful: lots of nuances from Jude Law, Sean Penn, Kate Winslet, Anthony Hopkins, and the rest. I saw reviews busting on Law for being so beautiful--a tragedy we share, of course--but honestly, I thought he did well at getting to the heart of Jack.
It really helped me to see the locations where they filmed: the statehouse, Burden's Landing, Mason City, and more.
My one quibble is the ending-- I love the book because it tells a tale of redemption, of making things right, of reconciliation--I think the film hints at it, but doesn't quite get there. |

How do movies this bad even get made anymore? Looked decent, too bad it was pointless, dumb, and unexciting. What's the point of having an R rating if no one is going to bleed when they get shot? I hated this trash. Other than that, the movie made absolutely no sense and pretty much soiled the careers of any actor involved with it. I'm very unhappy with Mr. Blonde, i thought he was less of a loser, guess not though. I can't believe i even made it through the entire movie, it seemed like 3-4 hours long, it was literally torture to watch. Garbage Garbage Garbage, since this movie doesn't seem to be out yet, the producers should probably just scrap it and save their selves a lot of embarrassment. Jesus, this movie REALLY sucked! |
